The 10 best cities in the world for being a freelancer

Do you want to work freelance? You may (or may not) be surprised that a city in Thailand ranks incredibly high for such work.

Interestingly, while the coronavirus pandemic has caused a stir around the world and destroyed the global work landscape, it has opened doors to more freelance work for professionals of all ages.

As more companies see teleworking as the new norm, a recent study by Carphone Warehouse shows which cities in the world are the most freelance workers.

Researchers analyzed ten different metrics to rank the 30 cities that provide the best quality of life for freelance workers.

These include the employment rate, monthly income, rent, public transportation, healthcare, the number of co-working spaces and internet speed.

The top city for professionals pursuing a portfolio career is Austin, Texas, where parameters such as the employment rate, monthly salary and general quality of life are very important.

Chiang Mai, Berlin and Barcelona are also some of the most freelance cities in the world. All cities do well for employment rates, internet speed and general quality of life.

Cities in emerging economies such as Bangladesh, Kenya and Egypt consistently rank low on various parameters, including internet speed, leisure activities and quality of life.

However, Cairo is the third cheapest city to live for freelancers in terms of monthly rent after Lahore in Pakistan and Dhaka in Bangladesh.

Surprisingly, the Indian capital has the highest number of co-working spaces (714) among the cities on the list.

Delhi is followed by London in England and Hong Kong, where freelancers can choose their new office corner from 509 and 422 co-working spaces, respectively.

While Melbourne, Amsterdam, Toulouse and Montréal are doing well for their quality of life, Austin has an impressive record, scoring top marks for both leisure activities and quality of life.
