Should Web Developers Use WordPress?
Hello, my name is Jure Reljanović. I am a nerd.
1. Inexpensive templates
WordPress has lots of cheap templates and themes that are easy to incorporate and can save you money if you can find a good YouTube tutorial. Just check out the sites like ThemeForest that sell templates and themes for under $ 20.
2. Beginner friendly
One of the biggest advantages of WordPress is that almost anyone can learn how to use it by just watching a few YouTube videos. It will likely take a few months to learn to code.
WordPress has a user interface that allows you to quickly change something, install or update plugins, add images, or anything else you want, which cuts the time it takes to build a website. So, if you’re a good web developer but need to create a simple website like a blog, it might be faster to just use WordPress. In fact, this blog is based on WordPress as it was easier for me to use WordPress and quickly create a blog that takes more time coding to create the exact same thing. I’d rather spend that extra time creating such content.
Plugins are one thing that can be very good and very bad at times. It’s good because of all the features you can get, but it’s also bad because they need to be updated very regularly, which can be very annoying when you have 20 plugins installed.
Plugins can be used to add sign-up forms, subscription forms, analytics tools, and some SEO tools that can greatly improve your website’s ranking on Google. On the other hand, if you code your website you won’t get such features, you will gain some and you will lose some.
1. Primarily for bloggers
WordPress is software originally designed to be used for blogging and it works best. Other types of websites that are more dynamic like some websites that are used to provide a software service like web hosting, editing images, etc. If you want to create websites like this, you can’t do it with WordPress either or it will be very inconvenient . Better to code it yourself or hire someone to do it for you.
On the other hand, if you want to create a website that is more static, like the blog or a website for a company that only showcases its services, like a restaurant website. For these types of websites, WordPress is more convenient and the people you are building a website for will not worry. How did you create your website? You only worry when the website looks bad.
Above I said that themes are very cheap and that’s a plus, but these themes are so similar and most people want their website to look unique which means you either have to change the theme or find someone else to do it for her.
If you’re looking to learn WordPress or get a bit more experience, here’s a course to use:
WordPress is very good software that is very useful when you want to create a blog, restaurant website, or any other website that is only there to showcase services, a website that is mostly static. It’s especially good if you are a freelancer and need to create a website for a local restaurant or coffee shop.
On the other hand, if you need to build a website that has a service (not a product) that you can use there, your best, and perhaps the only way, is to build that website with code. And if you’re using some types of APIs, WordPress is definitely not your choice.
