With millions of people around the world losing their jobs or working hours reduced due to COVID-19, the pandemic may also have sparked a new wave of workers in the gig economy.
Freelance work in Australia grew 86 percent over the past year as people looked for new sources of income, according to a Payoneer survey.
The number of online appearances published on Freelancer.com rose by 17 percent from 1.8 million in 2019 to more than 2.1 million in 2020.
There was one job on the platform, however, where demand exceeded any other job: folks who were experts on Flutter, an open source software development kit created by Google that is used to develop apps for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and more can create cheap costs.
Why did Flutter grow so much?
Software developers can use Flutter to create user interfaces with ready-made widgets. And while software development is a complex topic for most people, according to software and engineering firm AltexSoft, the platform appears to be fairly easy to learn for those with limited programming skills or experience creating apps.
There are plenty of resources out there for those looking to learn Flutter, and it has been a rapidly growing technology since 2018.
Apps built with Flutter also have better performance and startup time compared to other platforms.
When companies – perhaps for the first time – went digital and individuals freelanced, worked for themselves, or started their own businesses, they needed websites to showcase their services.
According to Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer, the pandemic has also increased the demand for new websites.
“Generally in 2020 startups and entrepreneurs [were] Creating websites and apps for all sorts of things like e-commerce, software as a service and games, ”he said.
The story goes on
“You do this intelligently with modern technology that lets you write code once and publish it anywhere, such as the web, iOS, and Android. Hence, with Flutter, one can see an increase in the demand for skills. “
Freelancer.com’s most sought-after job in 2020
Here are the 10 online jobs that saw demand rise the most in 2020:
Flutter wasn’t the only programming and web development job that saw high demand over the past year.
The demand for experts in seven other coding languages such as Firebase, Wix, RESTful API and Typescript increased by more than 90 percent.
The labor market shift in favor of freelancers will be permanent, Barrie said. The number of freelancers and employers looking for freelancers increases from the end of the first quarter of 2020 and lasts until the fourth quarter.
“While COVID-19 triggered the already upward movement of freelancers, this exponential growth can also be attributed to a strong desire for individuals to finally start their own freelance business, work on their own terms, and supplement their income,” said Barrie said.
