Freelancer.com reports jobs on platform rise by 17% in 2020; fastest-growing are in app and web development
January 15, 2021
Online recruiting platform Freelancer.com reported that the number of jobs on its platform increased 17% to 2.1 million jobs in 2020 compared to 1.8 million in 2019. The increase was due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Sydney-based company reported that the job category with the fastest growth in demand included those with proficiency in Flutter.
CEO Matt Barrie said the online freelance job market continues to thrive despite global challenges.
“A flurry of demand began towards the end of Q1 2020, and the number of users joining our platform increased tremendously through Q2 through Q4 2020, including freelancers and employers looking for freelancers,” said Barrie.
Covid-19 resulted in increased freelance growth, but Barrie said the growth was also spurred by people with a strong desire to start their own freelance business.
“These are promising times and positive signs for the gig economy,” said Barrie.
Topping the list was Flutter, an open source user interface software development kit published by Google. Developers use Flutter to build applications for Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, Windows, Google Fuchsia, and the web from a single code base.
Other popular coding languages were Firebase, Wix, RESTful API and Typescript
