Comet grabs $12.8 million for its engineering freelancer platform – TechCrunch
The French startup Comet (not to be confused with Zyl, which was formerly called Comet) is building a marketplace for talented tech and data freelancers as well as companies looking for engineers and teams for a specific project. The company has just closed a $ 12.8 million (EUR 11 million) financing round with Otium Venture and Daphni.
While Comet has received tens of thousands of applications, Comet currently works with 1,700 freelancers. This is a different approach than Upwork, Malt and other existing marketplaces. With Comet, companies can hire freelancers when needed without searching through hundreds of profiles.
100 customers use the platform to connect and hire freelancers. Companies upload their assignments and the Comet team compares freelancers with the right job within 48 hours. Comet is currently generating a transaction volume of around USD 1.16 million per month (EUR 1 million).
“Some freelancers say they want to become parents and spend more time with their children. It represents 30 percent of our freelancers. Others work like a normal employee around 230 days a year. This means a big increase in sales. “
But Comet doesn’t want to stop there. According to the startup, freelance work is the future of work. This means you may need to assemble a team of freelancers for a new project. Comet can now assemble teams of multiple freelancers with a project manager, back-end engineer, mobile developer, etc. Comet currently accounts for around 15 percent of Comet’s business.
Comet also wants to convince technicians that they can quit their job and become a full-time freelancer with little effort. The company will help you set up a professional bank account, get health insurance, pay less for your coworking space, and much more. Comet works with Alan, Qonto, Shine, Youse and other products.
The first time you’re applying to work as a freelancer at Comet, you will get a call from an HR student (a freelancer by the side) to see if you have the right soft skills. If you pass this first test, you will be presented with a technical challenge.
The company also collects feedback on each freelancer. When you sign up, Comet automatically reviews your previous work experience and open source activities on LinkedIn, GitHub, and Stack Overflow. The company automatically sends emails to CTOs from previous companies for feedback. And of course, as on all marketplaces, customers can rate freelancers after each job.
Comet reduces every transaction on the customer side by 10 percent. On average, freelancers make $ 150,000 per year before tax (EUR 130,000). The company plans to expand to London and Berlin over the next year.
